In February 2016, Bay Area funk fusion band More Fatter released a cover of Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam” with their own twist to it. In just a couple months, the video got over 17,000 views – a big break for a band in just its sixth month of existence. Lead vocalist/guitarist Tommy Economou says the cover has since led to many gig opportunities and taught the band the importance of timing with marketing their content. A huge Kanye fan, Theo Fedronic (trumpeter, vocalist) heard the song before Kanye released it. He came up with the idea to create the cover and release it around the same time as Kanye dropped “The Life of Pablo”. The band ended up creating the cover and shooting the video in a marathon three-day session over the course of President’s day weekend. Video editing was done by Bay Area-born USC student, John Russell.
Since playing their first public show on January 9th at El Rio, More Fatter will have played about 20 shows by the end of the year, ranging from local bars and frat houses at UC Berkeley, Stanford to Slim’s in SF. The band will be headlining historic blues/jazz club Boom Boom Room in San Francisco for the first time next Thursday, 12/22. Click here to find tickets!
When I asked the guys what they love most about the local scene, they said, “We love playing live shows in the area and being a part of the eclectic music community! We play a lot of intimate shows, which allow us to deeply connect with our audiences and pursue our mission of celebrating life and healing people!”
More Fatter will be releasing a debut record very soon, available on Spotify, Apple Music, BandCamp, and Soundcloud. Look out for the release of their first single next week, check out their music on YouTube here, and we’ll see you at Boom Boom Room Thursday!
*Footnote: I have recently started a series of posts called “Focus” where I will be talking about local bands from the Bay that stand out to me. Keep an eye out for more coming soon!
